1. Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Highlighting the natural world since 1962, Birmingham Botanical Gardens offer free admission and free parking, so it’s an affordable way to spend a pleasant spring day. The 67-acre site is one of the country’s most biodiverse areas, which means it has a wide variety of plant and animal life.

As you stroll through the grounds of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, you can view more than 24 different garden spaces that showcase different types of flora. From March to November, the gardens are open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Sunday at 2612 Lane Park Road.

2. Birmingham Zoo

You can visit one of the most impressive zoos in the South right here in Birmingham. Spanning 122 acres, the Birmingham Zoo is home to more than 500 animals from nearly 200 different species, including flamingos, zebras, bobcats, black bears, and many more.

General admission to the Birmingham Zoo costs $19.95 for adults and $14.95 for kids ages 2 to 17. Children younger than 2 get in free. The Zoo is located at 2630 Cahaba Road, and it’s open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

3. Vulcan Park and Museum

This unique attraction features a giant “iron man” statue, which was originally created for the 1904 World’s Fair. You can also check out exhibits showcasing Birmingham’s history, browse the gift shop, walk through the landscaped grounds, and even climb the observation tower for an unforgettable view.

Vulcan Park and Museum is located at 1701 Valley View Drive. The park is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., but the museum and gift shop close at 6 p.m.
